In Rutherford's gold foil experiment, most alpha particles passed through the gold foil without deflection and were detected on

the screen. What caused the particles to pass through without any deflection?
A. a large area of positively charged particles present in the gold foil.

B. the extremely high speed of the alpha particles passing through the gold foil.

C. a small area of negatively charged particles present in the gold foil.

An atom consists of a positively charged nucleus in the centre

There are electrons around the nucleus which are negatively charged

Most of space around nucleus is empty.

Alpha particles are positively charged

Now in Rutherford's experiment when alpha particles are passed through gold foil, the alpha particles

a) will get rebound from center (repulsion from central positive nucleus)

b) most of them get deflected as most of the part of atom is empty (no charged particle)

174 \; \text{protons} / (29 \; \text{copper atoms} \cdot \text{proton}^{-1}) = 6 \; \text{copper atoms}

Thus 174 protons would make at most 6 copper atoms. However, it would take 174 extra electrons (29 per atom) and even more neutrons than that to construct neutral copper atoms with stable nuclei.

Which solution has the higher boiling point: 42.0 g c2h6o2 in 0.500 kg of h2o or 35.0 g nacl in 0.500 kg of h2o?
Lelechka [254]

Answer:

  • The NaCl solution will have higher boiling point.

Explanation:

  • C2H6O2 is a molecular substance. Meaning that when it dissolves it will remain this way:

                                  C2H6O2 ---------> C6H12O6 (aq)

  • Sodiumchloride (NaCl) is an ionic substance. Meaning that when it dissolves, it will create ions:

                                   NaCl(s)-------> Na+(aq) + Cl- (aq)

Conclusion:

  • NaCl is an ionic compound and C2H6O2 is a molecular compound. Ionic compounds have higher boiling points than molecular compounds. Therefore, NaCl will have the higher boiling point.
