Read the excerpt from "Mother Tongue." Lately, I’ve been giving more thought to the kind of English my mother speaks. Like other

s, I have described it to people as “broken” or “fractured” English. But I wince when I say that. It has always bothered me that I can think of no other way to describe it other than “broken,” as if it were damaged and needed to be fixed, as if it lacked a certain wholeness and soundness. What can be inferred from the excerpt? Tan is embarrassed by the nonstandard form of English that her mother speaks. Tan believes that nonstandard forms of English are legitimate languages in their own right. Tan wishes that she did not have to think about the English that her mother speaks. Tan is angry that people are not taught nonstandard English languages in school.

Answer:

Tan believes that nonstandard forms of English are legitimate languages in their own right.

Explanation:

This is the statement that best describes what can be inferred from the passage. In this passage, Tan tells us that her mother speaks English in a way that is not standard. However, she also says that she hates describing this language as "broken" or "fractured," because this implies that there is something wrong with it. However, she believes it is simply different, and that it is a legitimate language in its own right.

Which sentence uses the active voice? my research paper was finished two days early. my research paper is being finished two day
Minchanka [31]
"I finished my research paper two days early."

A good way to determine active vs passive is to ask who performed the action. Did the subject perform the action, or was the action performed "by" the subject?

The subject performs the action in this sentence:

I = [subject]
finished = [action]
my research paper = [thing on which the action was performed]

In the other examples, the subject has an action performed on it.

My research paper = [subject]
was finished/is being finished = [action]
two days early = [time frame information, not really important for the discussion here]

At this point, you have no indication as to who will finish the paper, do you? No. You assume that the paper will be completed "by me," but it could just as easily be completed "by my friend."

If you can add "by [person/thing]" to a sentence, it's passive voice. If you can't, it's not. Clearly, you would never say "I finished my research paper by me."

Bogdan [553]

Answer:

Sundays too my father got up early

and put his clothes on in the blueblack cold,

then with cracked hands that ached

from labor in the weekday weather made

banked fires blaze. No one ever thanked him.

I’d wake and hear the cold splintering, breaking.

When the rooms were warm, he’d call,

and slowly I would rise and dress,

fearing the chronic angers of that house,

Speaking indifferently to him,

who had driven out the cold

and polished my good

Which of these topics would be too broad for writing a two-page report?
lbvjy [14]

The topic that will be too broad for a two-page report is;

  • The Bible

The Bible is a topic that will be too broad for a two-page report. This is because there are several schools of thought and understandings of what The Bible is, its credibility, its history, and survival over the years.

Any person writing about the Bible will have to make a lot of research to obtain facts and historical records of it.

Two pages might not be enough to contain it.
