Photosynthesis can be described as a process which plants use to produce their own food. In this process, carbon dioxide and water get converted into sugar (glucose) and oxygen. Light energy from the sun is needed for this reaction to occur.

The excess oxygen produced by this process is released into the atmosphere. The sugar made is used as fuel by the plant.
