In 1983, Dr. Barbara McClintock was awarded the Nobel Prize in Medicine for her research on corn genetics. Kernels of Indian cor

n come in different colors, such as purple, yellow and white. Sometimes the individual grains are purple with white streaks. This streaked effect defies principles of genetics because individual grains may be multicolored rather than a single color. The movement of transposons on chromosomes may result in colored, non-colored and variegated grains that do not fit traditional genetic ratios based solely on chromosome assortment during meiosis and random combination of gametes. The explanation for this phenomenon involves jumping genes or what we now refer to as transposons. McClintock's work with transposons calls into question the model of inheritance patterns we have learned in the past that is the basis of Mendelian genetics. Which model would be MOST weakened by McClintock's discovery? A) A B) B C) C D) D

Answer

<u>A) Segregation</u>

Explanation:

In Mendel's law of Segregation, each allele is inherited separately from each other within gametes- each gamete can only carry one gene.

Transposons refute this; here, variegation (regions of multiple colors) may occur due to "jumping genes" leading to multiple phenotypic variants like a multicolored seed,instead of a seed retaining one solid color. Mendelian ratios, thus, are not observed.

This is seen in instances such as Indian corn- these seeds may be purple, red, green and yellow. Variegation of seed color can occur to produce multicolored grains of purple and white.

<span>These organisms are called autotrophs. Autotrophs are also called 'self-feeders,' and they are able to produce energy from sunlight and carbon dioxide and are therefore known as 'producers.' The only autotrophs that we know of are plants and some types of algae. This makes all other organisms heterotrophs</span>

Constants are factors that are not changed in the experiment. Since the experiment is testing different colors of light on plant growth, light color is being changed, and is therefore not a constant. Hope this helps! :)

Bill has a perfect cube of an unknown substance. The density of the substance is 3.0 g/cm. He
Gwar [14]

The volume of the cube of unknown substance is 27\ cm^3. The length of one side of the cube is 9 cm

<u>Explanation:</u>

As per the formula of mass and density, Mass / Density equals to volume. Therefore as the mass of the cube was given to be 81 g and the density of the cube is known to be 3.0 g/\mathrm{cm}^{3},, to help Bill find out the volume. It is the ratio of mass and density and can be calculated as

      \text {volume}=\frac{\text {mass}}{\text {density}}=\frac{81 g}{3 g / \mathrm{cm}^{3}}=27 \mathrm{cm}^{3}

As it is a cube, the volume is product of length, breadth, and height. Here, all sides are same as it is the cube.

        volume= length \times breadth \times height

       27=3 l

      length of cube's one side, l=\frac{27}{3}=9 \mathrm{cm}
