The hydrolysis of tert-butyl chloride is given in the reaction below: (CH3)3CCl(aq) + H2O(l) → (CH3)3COH(aq) + H+(aq) + Cl-(aq)

Answer : The order of the reaction with respect to water is, zero.

Explanation :

Rate law : It is defined as the expression which expresses the rate of the reaction in terms of molar concentration of the reactants with each term raised to the power their stoichiometric coefficient of that reactant in the balanced chemical equation.

The given chemical reaction is:

(CH_3)_3CCl(aq)+H_2O(l)\rightarrow (CH_3)_3COH(aq)+H^+(aq)+Cl^-(aq)

The general rate law expression for the reaction is:

\text{Rate}=k[(CH_3)_3CCl]^a[H_2O]^b      ..........(1)

where,

a = order with respect to (CH_3)_3CCl

b = order with respect to H_2O

R = rate  law

k = rate constant

As we are given that:

\text{Rate}=k[(CH_3)_3CCl]        ...........(2)

By comparing equation 1 and 2, we get:

a = 1 and b = 0

That means, the rate is depending only on the concentration of tert-butyl chloride.

Hence, the order of the reaction with respect to water is, zero.

Which of the fallowing scientific claims about the bond in the molecular compound HF is most likely to be true?
DENIUS [597]

The bond is highly polar is the scientific claim about the bond in the molecular compound HF is most likely to be true.

The term polar means that there is separation of charges, the bonds will be the more polar the greater the difference in electronegativity between the bonded atoms.

  • In hydrogen fluoride, for example, F is more electronegative than H because its nucleus, with 9 positive charges, attracts e-shares with H more strongly than the nucleus of H, with only one positive charge.

  • Therefore, the e- shared by covalence will be closer to F than to H and the molecule forms a permanent dipole.

Therefore, we can conclude that the bond is highly polar is the scientific claim about the bond in the molecular compound HF is most likely to be true.

Read the false statement. Atoms of elements with one valence electron form anions in order to meet the octet rule. Which answer
Zepler [3.9K]

Answer:

C. Atoms of elements with five to seven valence electrons form anions in order to meet the octet rule.

Explanation:

  • Atoms of elements gain or lose electron(s) to obey the octet rule by forming cations or anions.
  • Atoms with 1 to 3 valence electrons lose electrons to form cations in order to attain a stable configuration.
  • Atoms with 5 to 7 valence electrons gain electron(s) to form anions in order to attain stable configuration.
  • However, atoms with 8 valence electrons do not require to gain or lose electrons since they an octet configuration.
  • Atoms of metallic elements such as those in group 1 and 2 lose electron(s) to form cations while atoms of non-metallic elements such as halogens require to gain electron(s) to form anions so as to obey the octet rule.
