An example of this is the garbage patch. More than 8 million tons of plastic ends up in the ocean every year. The patch is a floating island of garbage that’s made up of 46 percent of fishing nets. This impacts ocean life in that environment. When marine life eats plastic it creates toxins which hurt multiple parts of the food chain.
