A quiz has multiple-choice questions, each with 5 choices. The answer possibilities are distributed evenly. If a student gets a

correct answer they will receive +3 points. If they leave it blank, they will receive 0 points. If they write an incorrect answer, they will receive -1 point. A student guesses the answers to some questions. Determine on average, in the long run, how many points the student will score. (Write your answer as a decimal, with a minus sign if needed.)

Answer:

On an average the number of points that a student will score is:

                                 -0.2

Step-by-step explanation:

The probability of choosing a correct answer = 1/5

( Since out of the 5 choices we have just one correct answer)

The probability of choosing a wrong answer = 4/5

( Since out of the 5 choices only one is correct and 4 are incorrect)

Scores received on correct answer = +3

Scores received on wrong answer = -1

The average scores, in long run will be equal to the expected value. The expected value E, in this case will be:

E=\dfrac{1}{5}\times 3+\dfrac{4}{5}\times (-1)\\\\E=\dfrac{3}{5}-\dfrac{4}{5}\\\\E=\dfrac{3-4}{5}\\\\E=\dfrac{-1}{5}\\\\E=-0.2

Thus, in long run, the student will score -0.2 points on average.

suppose you know that over the last 10 years, the porbabiliy that your town would have at least one ma jor stor was 40%. describ
Anuta_ua [19.1K]

Answer:

The probability of a big storm is 40%.

Now, you can find a D10 (a die with 10 faces)

You can assign 4 numbers (0, 1, 2, 3) to the event "there is a major storm"

in this way, you have 40% of having a storm.

and the other 6 numbers (4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9) to the event "there is not a major storm". This means that we have 60% of not having a storm.

now, when you roll the dice you can see if a year there will be a storm or not.

Now, you roll the dice 5 times (for the 5 years) and take note of the results and the number of storms in those 5 rolls.

Now do the same thing a bunch of times, at least 25 times.

Now, you recorded the results in each set of rolls, now see the number of sets that have at least years with storms.

Take that number and divide it by the total number of sets of data (in this case 25, for example)

The result is the probability that we are looking for.

By how much does the dependent variable change in response to a change of 1 unit of the independent variable?
dalvyx [7]

Answer: C) 5

--------------

x = independent variable, y = dependent variable

Assuming this is a linear function, each increase of x by 2 leads to y going up by 10. So 10/2 = 5 is the unit increase each time x bumps up by 1.

-------------------

An alternative is to use the slope formula to get

m = (y2 - y1)/(x2 - x1)

m = (25 - 15)/(4 - 2)

m = 10/2 <--- this expression shows up again

m = 5 <---- leading to the same answer as before

So we see that the slope formula is a more drawn out method to finding the answer.
