The aorta is the main artery of the body. It is a large diameter, elastic walled artery that helps stabilize blood flow. It receives oxygenated blood from the lungs, which is pumped through the left ventricle of the heart.

From the aortic curve (aortic arch) three main branches depart. They are: the arterial brachiocephalic trunk (which gives rise to the right common carotid and subclavian arteries), the left common carotid artery and the left subclavian artery.

Then the aorta descends, originating, in the thoracic and abdominal region, other branches that irrigate the organs located there. Finally, there are the terminal branches of the aorta that divide into right and left common iliac arteries.
