In the given diagram, the traingles USW and UTV are similar triangles and thus the following ratio equality applies to them.

\frac{VT}{WS} =\frac{VU}{WU}=\frac{TU}{SU}..........(Equation 1)

Checking the diagram given, we see that:

VT=y, WS=22, VU=8, ST=x-2

WU=WV+VU=12+8=20

TU=5

SU=ST+TU=(x-2)+5=x+3

Thus, substituting the required values in (Equation 1) we get:

\frac{y}{22}=\frac{8}{20}=\frac{5}{x+3}

Now, as can be clearly seen, to find y we will use the first two ratios as:

\frac{y}{22}=\frac{8}{20}

y=\frac{8\times 22}{20}=8.8

In a similar manner, to find the value of x we can use the last two ratios:

\frac{8}{20}=\frac{5}{x+3}

After cross multiplication we get:

5\times 20=8(x+3)

Which can be simplified as:

x+3=\frac{100}{8} =12.5

Thus, x=12.5-3=9.5

Therefore, the required answer is:

x=9.5 and y=8.8

The ratio of Shauntay's cards to Jessica's cards is 5 to 3. After Shauntay gives Jessica 12 of her cards, both girls have the sa
Zepler [3.9K]

Answer:

They have 48 cards.

Step-by-step explanation:

let s be the number of Shauntay's cards and j be the number of Jessica's cards.

The ratio of Shauntay's cards to Jessica's cards is 5 to 3, then

(1) \frac{s}{j} =\frac{5}{3}

After Shauntay gives Jessica 12 of her cards, both girls have the same number of cards, then

(2) s-12 =j+12.

From (2), we get s= j+24. If we put j+24 instead of s in (1) we get:

\frac{j+24}{j} =\frac{5}{3}

3×j+24×3 = 5×j  From this we get;

2×j=72  and j=36

After Shauntay gives Jessica 12 of her cards, Shauntay and Jessica would have 48 cards.

If the discriminate of a quadriatic equation is 4, how many solutions does the equation have?
Tanya [424]

Answer:

two solutions

Step-by-step explanation:

If you have a discriminant value greater than zero (not zero and not negative), you're gonna have two solutions. For zero discriminant, one solution. For negative discriminant, no solutions at all.

Make sure you remember this. It will save you from solving a quadratic equation which has no solutions.
