The molecular geometry of a molecule describes the three-dimensional shape of just the atoms. This is in contrast to the electro

nic geometry, which describes the shape of all electron regions. To determine the molecular geometry of a molecule, one must first determine the electronic geometry by drawing the Lewis structure. What is the molecular geometry of PH3?

Answer:

trigonal pyramid

Explanation:

PH_3

Valence electrons of phosphorus = 5

Valence electrons of hydrogen = 1

The total number of the valence electrons = 5 + 3(1) = 8

The Lewis structure is drawn in such a way that the octet of each atom and duet for the hydrogen in the molecule is complete. So,

The Lewis structure is shown below in the image below.

The central atom , P has 3 bonded pairs of electrons and 1 non bonded.

Number of bond pairs = 3

Number of lone pairs = 1

The formula is AB_3L.

According to VSEPR theory, PH_3 has trigonal pyramidal shape to minimize the repulsions.

In your own words, define:
vodomira [7]

Hey there!

1.)

The law of conservation of mass states that matter cannot be created or destroyed. This means in a chemical reaction, the products must be equal to the reactants.

2.)

In a balanced chemical equation, there are the same amount of each type of atom, or element, on each side. The products must be equal to the reactants to follow the law of conservation of mass.

3.)

When a chemical reaction occurs, we can see evidence such as bubbles, odor, color change, and heat/light being released. These all are signs that a new substance is being formed.

Hope this helps!

Describe the term molarity as it relates to an acid or base.
Sidana [21]
Molarity is expressed as the number of moles of solute per volume of the solution. For example, we are given a solution of 2M NaOH this describes a solution that has 2 moles of NaOH per 1 L volume of the solution. Acids and bases can be measured through the concentrations of H+ and OH- ions in units of molarity. Hope this helps.
