One method for separating polypeptides utilizes their different solubilities. The solubility of large polypeptides in water depe

nds upon the relative polarity of their R groups, particularly the number of ionized groups. The more ionized groups there are, the more soluble the polypeptide. Which polypeptide, ( Phe − Met ) 3 or ( Glu ) 20 , is more soluble at pH 7.0 ?

Answer:

Polypeptides are composed of amino acids, and we know amino acids are differently charged, have different R groups, and also have different isoelectric points. Depending on different isoelectric points and charged groups, the polypeptides can be separated and because a protein has its lowest solubility on its isoelectric point.

So in this question,

(a) (Lys-Ala)3 ; this is highly positively charged (polar) at pH 7 than (Gly)20 which is uncharged except for the amino and carboxyl terminal.

(b) (Glu)20 ; it is highly negatively charged at pH 7 whereas (Phe-Met)3 is much less polar and hence less soluble.

(c) (Asn-Ser-His)5 ; at pH 3, because in (Ala-Asp-Gly)5 the carboxylate groups of Asp residues are partially protonated and neutral, whereas in (Asn-Ser-His)5 , the imidazole groups of His residues are fully protonated and positively charged.

(d) (Asn-Ser-His)5; at pH 6.0; both polymers have polar Ser sidechains, but (Asn-Ser-His)5 also has the polar Asn side chains and partially protonated His side chains.

Which statement is true about the electrons in each polar bond of a water molecule? They are more attracted by the oxygen atom th
Stels [109]

Answer:

They are more attracted by the oxygen atom than by the hydrogen atom.

Explanation:

The bond between hydrogen and oxygen atoms in a water molecular is polar in nature. This is due to the differences in electronegativity of oxygen and hydrogen. Oxygen is much more electronegative than hydrogen.

The higher electronegativity of oxygen atom means that it attracts the electrons of the bond towards itself. Hence, the electrons of the bond between hydrogen and oxygen atoms in a water molecule are more attracted towards oxygen atom due to its higher electronegativity.

Which property is used to identify the origin of an igneous rock?
slega [8]

Answer: Hardness

Igneous rock derives it's name from the Latin word ignis which means fire. It is formed when the magma after volcanic eruption gets cool and solidified either on the surface of earth crust or inside the earth crust. These rocks are characterized by their hardness. These rocks undergoes no chemical weathering but exhibit very low mechanical or physical weathering may occur. Therefore, hardness is the property which can be used to identify the origin of an igneous rock.

Adipose tissue is one of the most hydrated of all tissues in the human body. True or False
Luden [163]

Answer:

The statement is false.

Explanation:

Adipose tissue is a connective tissue specialized in lipid storage. Its ability to store lipids depends on its cells, adipocytes, which can contain large drops of fat in your cytoplasm. The fat in the cells is in a semi-liquid state and is mainly composed of triglycerides. All our organs and tissues contain different levels of water, adipose tissue has approximately 10% of water. The brain and muscles are approximately 75% water, the blood and kidneys consist of 81% water.
