One method for separating polypeptides utilizes their different solubilities. The solubility of large polypeptides in water depe

nds upon the relative polarity of their R groups, particularly the number of ionized groups. The more ionized groups there are, the more soluble the polypeptide. Which polypeptide, ( Phe − Met ) 3 or ( Glu ) 20 , is more soluble at pH 7.0 ?

Answer:

Polypeptides are composed of amino acids, and we know amino acids are differently charged, have different R groups, and also have different isoelectric points. Depending on different isoelectric points and charged groups, the polypeptides can be separated and because a protein has its lowest solubility on its isoelectric point.

So in this question,

(a) (Lys-Ala)3 ; this is highly positively charged (polar) at pH 7 than (Gly)20 which is uncharged except for the amino and carboxyl terminal.

(b) (Glu)20 ; it is highly negatively charged at pH 7 whereas (Phe-Met)3 is much less polar and hence less soluble.

(c) (Asn-Ser-His)5 ; at pH 3, because in (Ala-Asp-Gly)5 the carboxylate groups of Asp residues are partially protonated and neutral, whereas in (Asn-Ser-His)5 , the imidazole groups of His residues are fully protonated and positively charged.

(d) (Asn-Ser-His)5; at pH 6.0; both polymers have polar Ser sidechains, but (Asn-Ser-His)5 also has the polar Asn side chains and partially protonated His side chains.

If a mammal did not obtain enough iodine in its diet, you might expect ________.
Natasha_Volkova [10]

Iodine, like all other minerals, is required in considerable quantity in the body. The function of iodine is that it is necessary for proper metabolic function in an animal.

The lack of iodine in a mammal will cripple the physical and metabolic functions and causes developmental delays in the mammal.

Bacterial cells usually have cell walls, as do animal cells.<br> a. True<br> b. False
olga2289 [7]

Answer:

False.

Explanation:

Bacteria are the prokaryotic organism that lacks the well developed nucleus and the membrane bound cell organelle. The animal cells are the eukaryotic organisms.

Bacteria cells have cell walls that are made of the peptidoglycan layer. The cell wall of bacteria are important as it protect themselves from the extreme environment. The animal cells do not contain cell wall and they have plasma membrane only in their structure.

Thus, the correct answer is option (b).

Construction workers attach ropes and pulleys to wooden timbers on an old bridge.
balu736 [363]

Answer:

It is a safe and efficient method.

Explanation:

This method of dismantle the bridge is also a good one but there are some other methods also that are used instead of rope and pulley system such as destroy the bridge by using bombs at the base of pillars and cutting of each part in order to dismantle the bridge. This rope and pulley system is also an efficient way to dismantle the bridge so that's why the engineers used this method instead of other methods due to its safe method.

Conducting experiments, using inquiry, and asking testable questions are processes that are used by
nignag [31]
They utilize and make use of the scientific method in order to have clear basis and evidence for their investigations. Research method is always used to answer every scientific inquiry and in gaining evidential data or knowledge. The scientific method has the following process or at least undergoes the process of
1. Observation
2. Hypothesis
3. Experimentation
4. Interpretation of data
5. Evaluating the data
6. Passing and recording the data

These steps are crucial and the empirical data that these scientists obtain are very important to keep that is why research paper, thesis and dissertations exists.

Hope this helps
