Okay so lets look at the equation given
a ^{2} + {b}^{2} = {c}^{2}
this is the Pythagorean theorem, this equation holds true to all right angle triangles.

for the "a" and "b" terms must be the two shortest lengths and "c" must be the longest length.
why? because "c" represents the hypotenuse in this theorem and the hypotenuse is by definition the longest side of a right triangle.

(side note: always draw a picture, it helps a lot if you doodle a bit to get an idea of what you are working with)

we are given three lengths : 3 , 4, and 5 (im ignoring the measurements for now)

we can look at it two ways with a picture and through algebra

try to draw a right triangle with the given info. you'll see there are only two cases were this is possible the picture above is one case where this is not possible

now we can look at this algebraically
a = 3 \\ b = 4 \\ c = 5
(but "a" and "b" can swap lengths)

now with the Pythagorean theorem we can see how this plays out
{a}^{2} + {b}^{2} = {c}^{2} \\ {3 }^{2} + {4}^{2} = {5 }^{2} \\ 9 + 16 = 25 \\ 25 = 25
and heres with "a" and "b" lengths swapped
{4}^{2} + {3}^{2} = {5}^{2} \\ 16 + 9 = 25 \\ 25 = 25
now here's a case when we let 5 , our longest length , become a leg and let one our shorter lengths take the place of "c"

a = 5 \\ b = 3 \\ c = 4 \\ {5}^{2} + {3}^{2} = {4}^{2} \\ 25 + 9 = 16 \\ 34 = 16 \:
obviously 34 does not equal 16

hope this helped you out

Write an expression for the area of the shaded region in its simplest form. Show all of your steps.
patriot [66]
The area of the shaded region will be the area of the rectangle minus the area of the white square inside of it:

((x+10)(2x+5)) - ((x+1)(x+1))

First, FOIL both of the areas separately:

(2x^2 + 5x + 20x + 50) - (x^2 + x + x + 1)

Simplify within the parentheses by adding like terms:

(2x^2 + 25x + 50) - (x^2 + 2x + 1)

Now, subtract one equation from the other:

2x^2 + 25x + 50
-x^2  -    2x  -   1
= x^2 + 23x + 49

This will be the equation for the area.

Two pans of a balance are 31.8 cm apart. The fulcrum of the balance has been shifted 1.06 cm away from the center by a dishonest
stepladder [879]

Answer:

The percentage = (1.06/15.9) x 100℅

= 6.67℅

Step-by-step explanation:

For the two pan to be balanced in other to measure an object's accurate weight, the fulcrum must be exactly in the mid point of the distance/separation between the two pans.

In the case in this question, the dishonest shopkeeper has shifted the fulcrum by 1.06cm.

The pan separation is 31.8cm

The fulcrum position must be 31.8/2 = 15.9cm, for it to be balanced.

The percentage by which the true weight marked up by the shopkeeper is:

(1.06/True fulcrum position) x 100℅

The mean GPA for 127 residents of the local apartment complex is 1.6. What is the best point estimate for the mean GPA for all r
madam [21]

By the Central Limit Theorem, the best point estimate for the mean GPA for all residents of the local apartment complex is 1.7.

The Central Limit Theorem established that, for a normally distributed random variable X, with mean and standard deviation, the sampling distribution of the sample means with size n can be approximated to a normal distribution with mean  and standard deviation ;

For a skewed variable, the Central Limit Theorem can also be applied, as long as n is at least 30.

In this problem, we have that:

The sample of 112 residents has a mean GPA of 1.7.

By the Central Limit Theorem, the best point estimate for the mean GPA for all residents of the local apartment complex is 1.7.
