Biotic means that something is living, and abiotic means something isn't alive. Paper, since it came from trees, a living thing, is a biotic factor.

Biotic things are alive. While paper is made out of wood, which is made out of trees, which are alive, paper in itself is not alive, and is therefore abiotic.
