709 pounds Hg=______ liters Hg

Chemistry

Answer:

23.6 L

Explanation:

Several conversion factors are needed to solve this problem. The following relationships are required:

1 lb = 453.59 g

Now, the density of mercury is:

d = 13.6 g/mL

As well as another conversion factor between liters and milliliters:

1 L = 1000 mL

We might apply dimensional analysis problem solving technique for this problem. We start with lb and we wish to convert into grams first, this is done by multiplying lb by a factor of g/lb, so that pounds cancel out and we obtain grams.

Having grams, we'll multiply by a factor of mL/g to cancel out the grams and obtain milliliters.

After we have milliliters, we'll multiply by L/ml factor to convert into liters finally.

Putting all of this together, we obtain:

709 lb Hg\cdot \frac{453.59 g}{1 lb}\cdot \frac{1 mL}{13.6 g}\cdot \frac{1 L}{1000 mL} = 23.6 L

What are the purposes of theories in science?
Leto [7]

Answer:

Scientific theories are testable and make falsifiable predictions. They describe the causes of a particular natural phenomenon and are used to explain and predict aspects of the physical universe or specific areas of inquiry (for example, electricity, chemistry, and astronomy).

A good theory in the theoretical sense is (1) consistent with empirical observations; is (2) precise, (3) parsimonious, (4) explanatorily broad, and (5) falsifiable; and (6) promotes scientific progress (among others; Table 1.1).

1. Answer;

False

Explanation;

Bases have some of the following properties;

 • They have a bitter taste
 • They have a slimy, or soapy feel on fingers
 • Most bases react with acids and precipitate salts.
 • Strong bases may react violently with acids.
 • Bases turn red litmus paper blue

2. Answer;

An acid

Explanation;

 • When acids are dissolved in water, the concentration of the acid decreases and it becomes dilute.
 • It dissociates in water to give H+ ions or hydrogen ions.
 • All acidic solutions contain more hydrogen ions than hydroxide ions, therefore when added to water it increases the concentration of H+ ions in water, as water is a neutral substance whose concentration of H+ ions is equal to OH-.

Suppose the plates beneath Earth's surface stopped moving.What do you think would happen?Explain your answer.
Amanda [17]
There would be no more earthquakes or volcanic eruptions as the earth's plate are the cause of both these occurrences.(which can be seen as a positive)
However, the plates allow the earth to cool when they move because they cause heat loss.If the plates were to stop moving the earth would have to loose heat another way and since we cant tell how this would happen, it could be very dangerous.
