Water plays a critical role in the sustenance of the ecosystem. Water contains many living things but it is in itself is a non-living thing. Therefore, it is considered an abiotic factor and is important for terrestrial environments.

Further Explanation:

The type of ecosystem present specifically on landforms is the terrestrial ecosystem or environment. The taiga, tundra, deserts, and grasslands are some of the terrestrial ecosystems that exist today. The terrestrial environment is characterized by low availability of water which makes water a limiting factor in such areas. Such environment also shows high-temperature fluctuations, increased light availability, and a higher number of gases. The gases such as nitrogen is required as a nitrogen fixation substrate, carbon dioxide as a photosynthetic substrate, and oxygen for aerobic respiration.

Water is one of the most important abiotic factors as every organism (plant or animal) requires water. An environment is made up of both biotic and abiotic components. The biotic components include plants, animals, bacteria, and fungi whereas, the abiotic or non-living components are sunlight, air, water, soil, and temperature. The plants in the terrestrial environment utilize water for their growth and development. Water helps carry the nutrients from one cell to another and take away the waste material. In animals, water is required for the proper functioning of the digestive system as well as for the lubrication in the gastrointestinal or respiratory tract.

In the terrestrial environment, due to limited water, dehydration plays a major threat. For this reason, the organisms of the terrestrial environment are well adapted in retaining water and transporting it to the rest of the body from the limited sites of acquisition. They are also adapted to prevent water loss from body surfaces.

Which of the following is a characteristic of fermented foods?
Kobotan [32]

A vinegar flavor

The fermentation of food is the breakdown of the food molecules, anaerobically.

Explanation:

Usually, anaerobic bacteria or yeast are able to break down molecules like glucose in the absence of oxygen because their main cellular respiration metabolic chain is glycolysis. The pyruvate that is formed at the end of glycolysis is readily converted to lactic acid by the cells before being excreted by the cells. This is why fermented food tastes sour like vinegar. Sourness is a general characteristic of acids.
