Yes, they're allowed to use tricks like that to get a confession.

United States' legal system allow police officers to lie about having a witness when they're conducting an investigation in order to open an opportunity for a bargain. What they're not allowed to do is lying about the punishment that could be charged to the suspect.

The police are allowed to use the psychological trick to get someone’s confession. The police are not allowed to use physical force but are allowed to use the psychological trick in interrogation.

EXPLANATION

The confessions of a suspect must be given voluntarily. The police should not use physical force to coerce a suspect into confessing. Even though police have been prohibited to use physical force as a weapon to get a confession, they are allowed to use psychological tricks to get someone’s confession. The most common psychological tricks that the police use is deception.

As an example, police are allowed to tell the suspect that they found the suspect’s fingerprint and DNA evidence in the crime scene, while in reality, the police didn’t find anything. The government permits the police to use deception for factual matters. The police can use this to get the real and most truthful confession from the suspect.

Even if psychological tricks are allowed, but there are not applied without limits. One thing that the police are not allowed to use is telling lies about legal rights. For example, the police should not misinterpret the legal rights of a defendant by telling the suspect that their confession will not be used to charge them.

For example, the police shouldn’t tell a suspect that they believe the murder is accidental and they will not get arrested or threatened to arrest the suspect’s family. Even though psychological tricks are allowed, they still have to be used within rules and limitations.

kifflom [539]
Well, two answers are very close and in a way both correct:

Having the freedom to do whatever someone wants

Having the freedom to make decisions that align with one s desires, goals, and social context

I would say the second one is better- one is rarely really free to do everything, as one is limited by resources etc, but autonomy would still mean being able to make decisions that align with one s desires, goals, and social context.
