There are five easy steps to becoming an expert at using context clues:
- Circle the word or phrase you don't understand.
- Underline key phrases and ideas in the sentence. ...
- Give the main idea of the paragraph the new word is in.
- Say the sentence in your own words.
- Guess at what the new word means.

The Jim Crow
laws were designed to enforce discrimination and segregation in the south. Their
purpose was to ensure that white Americans remain in control over the black
population through economic and social dominance. As well as in control over
women too. Unfortunately, men deemed women only slightly better than African
Americans in terms of their social standing as they expected them to be subservient
to men who were the heads of the households.
A call to action could be a debate or a protest, or even a letter. So long as you're bringing up an issue and resolving it, then I think that would classify as a call to action.
