Excitation-contraction coupling is a mechanism by which the electrical signal (action potential) becomes a mechanical action (contraction). This whole situation is made in the presence of calcium which is the chemical messenger necessary for this coupling to occur. Excitation-contraction coupling refers to events that link the action potentials in the sarcolemma to the activation of the myofilaments.
