Cell surface or membrane is made of phospholipid bilayer with embedded proteins and sugars. Cell membrane acts as a barrier between cell and its external environment but it is also responsible for the communication with other cells and transport of molecules inside and outside the cell. It is selectively permeable to ions and molecules (some of them pass through the membrane easily, while others require transport proteins or channels). There are 4 ways of molecule transport:

1. Diffusion – no energy required

2. Facilitated transport – transport proteins included

3. Active and co-transport – energy required

4. Vesicle transport (exocytosis and endocytosis)

Microvilli are extensions of cell membrane that increase its surface for diffusion.

Different types of cell junctions have a different influence on the membrane transport. For example, tight junctions are a barrier and the molecules are unable to pass through.

Where does the fertilized egg grow and develop while a woman is pregnant
Scilla [17]

Answer: Uterus

Explanation:

A fertilized egg is called ZYGOTE, and it is the product of fusion between a sperm cell and ovum cell.

The zygote is attached and housed in a muscular organ known as Uterus, commonly referred to as Womb. Here, the zygote grows and develops for several weeks into a foetus and then a human child (baby) in the pregnant woman

Which is not a function of the kidneys?
NikAS [45]

Answer:

D. They release waste into the bloodstream.

Explanation:

Kidneys are the primary organs of the excretory system. Their primary function is to remove the metabolic waste from the blood and release it out of the body in the form of urine. The nitrogenous waste, drugs, uric acid, and other metabolic waste products are removed from blood in kidneys.

Hence, kidneys do not release the waste into the bloodstream, rather release them out of the body and filter the blood.

Earth’s layers are determined by their physical properties and chemical composition. In the lesson, you learned about each of Ea
Mkey [24]

Answer:

Generally, the Earth is divided into spheres which include the "lithosphere" (land), "hydrosphere" (water), "biosphere" (living things), and "atmosphere" (air). The earth is divided into three layers based on chemical composition and these are the core, mantle and crust. In addition, the earth is also divided into physical properties which include lithosphere, athenosphere, mesosphere, outer core and inner core. Based on the given details, we can conclude that the atmosphere cannot be part of the lithosphere but instead, it is classified in a separate layer. The lithosphere only consists the outermost, rigid part of the Earth, which are the crust and the mantle. Hope this answer helps
