  • The Church wanted to used that opportunity to ask for forgiveness.

In the year 1616, the Catholic Church was known to have made an edict that was said to have been against or have hindered  the use of the Copernican theory in regards to the earth's motion.

Note that this was one that was said to have led later in the year 1633 to what we call the Inquisition trial and the outright condemnation of Galileo Galilei as a person who was suspected as heretic.

Therefore, The  catholic church decided to reexamine Galileo's case in the 1980s due to factors such as:

  • popular pressure
  • The Church wanted to used that opportunity to ask for forgiveness.
