While visiting Venice, Emily sees a sign that St. Mark's Square is 1,500 meters ahead. She wonders how long it will take her to

get there if she walks at her usual pace of 15 minutes per mile. She decides to use the fact that 3 miles is approximately 5 kilometers to figure it out. In how many minutes should Emily expect to reach St. Mark's Square?

Emily should expect to reach St Mark's market within 13.5 min

Step-by-step explanation:

3 mile = 5 km

1 mile = 5/3 km

Emily can cover 1 mile in 15 min

i.e, 5/3 km in 15 min

i.e, (5 X 1000)/3 meters in 15 min

i.e, 5000/3 m in 15 min

1 m she will cover in 15/(5000/3) min

                                =( 15 X 3 )/5000 min

so, 1500 m she will cover = (15 X 3 X 1500)/5000

                                         = 27/2 min = 13.5 min

A cheetah runs 300 feet in 2.29 seconds. How would you convert the cheetahs speed to miles per hour?
xeze [42]

plain and short, an hour has 60 minutes, and a minute has 60 seconds, therefore an hour has 60*60 or 3600 seconds, and we can express that  rate as hr/3600s or the other way around 3600s/hr, depending on which version we need.

a mile has 5280 feet, again, we can use that rate as mile/5280ft or 5280ft/mile, as needed.

\bf \cfrac{300 ft}{2.29 s}\cdot \cfrac{3600 s}{hr}\cdot \cfrac{mi}{5280 ft}~\hspace{10em}\stackrel{\textit{using minutes as well}}{\cfrac{300 ft}{2.29 s}\cdot \cfrac{60 min}{hr}\cdot \cfrac{60 s}{min}\cdot \cfrac{mi}{5280 ft}}
