The easiest way to solve that would be elimination method, but if you have to do substitution:
x-9=-3
add 9 to each side to get
x=6
then plug 6 into the other equation for x
2(6)-y=23
and solve for y :)

2x - y = 23
x - 9 = -3

x - 9 = -3
  + 9  + 9
     x = 6
2(6) - y = 23
  12 - y = 23
- 12      - 12
       -y = 11
         y = -11
(x, y) = (6, -11)

Hello from MrBillDoesMath!

Answer:   factor = 4

Discussion:

Look at the sequence of numbers

1/64,  1/16,    1/4,    1,   4

It's seems clear that multiplying a term by 4 gives the next term in the sequence.

Thank you,

Answer:

Mark earns 12 dollars an hour, and Steven earns 15 dollars.

Mark earned 6*12=72 dollars, and Steven earned 15*5=75 dollars.

Step-by-step explanation:

Let's set Mark's salary as x.

Steven=x+3

Last Friday, Steven earned 5(x+3) dollars, while Mark earned 6x dollars.

We can write the sum of these salaries as:

5(x+3)+6x=147

5x+15+6x=147

11x+15=147

11x=132

x=12

Then, we can substitute x with 12.

Mark earns 12 dollars an hour, and Steven earns 15 dollars.

Mark earned 6*12=72 dollars, and Steven earned 15*5=75 dollars.
