During the drought of 1977, 84 percent of the medium ground finch population on Daphne Major disappeared. The individuals that s

urvived had beaks that were deeper and larger than the beaks of individuals who did not survive.
Given that natural selection favored large individuals with deeper and larger beaks, how can the presence of individuals with small, pointier beaks in 1983 be explained?

A) Researchers were not measuring juvenile birds in 1977 but did measure juvenile birds in 1983. It is a well-known fact that juvenile birds are small and have small beaks.
B) These islands were colonized from the mainland. These small-beaked individuals must have flown over from Ecuador.
C) Even though the majority of birds after 1977 had deeper and larger beaks, there was still variation in beak size in the population. As seed type and seed availability changed, birds with beaks suited to exploit abundant seeds had higher reproductive success.
D) These islands must have received immigrants from a neighboring island.

Answer:

Even though the majority of birds after 1977 had deeper and larger beaks, there was still variation in beak size in the population. As seed type and seed availability changed, birds with beaks suited to exploit abundant seeds had higher reproductive success.

Explanation:

Natural selection favors the genetic traits that increase the chance of survival and reproduction of the individuals under the prevailing surroundings. After the drought, the finches with larger and deeper beaks were present in the population as they were better able to survive.

However, the population had genetic variations with regard to the beak size and the gene for small and pointier beak was also present in the gene pool. Changes in the conditions, such as seed type and availability led to the natural selection of small and pointier beaks that were able to survive and reproduce under the present conditions.

Diffusion of ions across membranes through specific ion channels is driven by ________. Group of answer choices ion concentratio
TiliK225 [7]

Answer:

The correct choice is ''ion electrochemical gradients''.

Diffusion of ions across membranes through specific ion channels is driven by ion electrochemical gradients.

Explanation:

An electrochemical gradient can be considered as that electrical (electrostatic pressure) and chemical (diffusion) force that determine the movement of molecules and ions across the membrane. This electrochemical gradient, in addition to causing movement of substances through cell membranes, is also a type of potential energy available for the performance of different cellular activities, potential energy called membrane potential.

Firlakuza [10]

Answer:

Corbin recently found out that he has cancer, and he now strictly follows a treatment, diet, and exercise program that the doctor thinks will be helpful in keeping the cancer from spreading. These behaviors best illustrate problem-focused coping.

Explanation:

Problem-focused coping seeks to tackle the stressor head-on allowing the individual greater perceived control over their problem resulting in :

 • Managing and changing the stressor
 • Use if problem seems alterable
 • Confrontice coping
 • Planful problem solving

As Cobbin is strictly following treatment, diet and exercise programs that the doctor thinks will be helpful in keeping the cancer from spreading, Cobbin is showing problem-focused coping.

Which of these is unique to flowering plants?haploid gametophytes,an embryo surrounded by nutritive tissue, double fertilization,
fiasKO [112]

Answer:

double fertilization

Explanation:

Flowering plants or angiosperms are seed-producing plants with the ability to produce reproductive organs-flowers and fruits with seed in it (unlike gimnosperms which contain naked seed). Another distinctive feature of angiosperms is their reduced gametophytes. This feature most likely reduces the time between pollination and fertilization. Fertilization in flowerin plants is double, meaning that two sperm cells fertilize ovule cells(egg cell and central nuclei cell): one forms diploid zygote which will develop in embryo, while other form triploid cell which will develop into endosperm (provides nutrition for the embryo).
