Jan worked 38 h last week. she worked four times as many 8-hour shifts as 6-hour shifts. how many 8-hour shifts did she work?

8x + 6y = 38

x = 4y

substituting for x in the first equation:-

8(4y) + 6y = 38
38y = 38 
y = 1

therefore x = 4(1) = 4
