Answer to 9:

  1. Make your denominators the same. Since 9 goes into 54 6 times, multiply the numerator and denominator of -1/9 by 6. \frac{-6}{54} =\frac{-1}{9}
  2. Add numerators together. \frac{9}{54} +\frac{-6}{54} = \frac{3}{54}
  3. Reduce and your answer should be 1/18

Answer to 10:

  1. Find the LCM (least common multiple), which is 36.
  2. Multiply the numerator and denominator from 6/12 by 3 to get it to have a similar denominator as the second fraction.
  3. Multiply numerator and denominator from -4/9 by 4 to get to same denominator as the first fraction.
  4. Add the fractions together and reduce. \frac{18}{36}+\frac{-16}{36}=\frac{2}{36}=\frac{1}{18}
  5. Your answer should be 1/18.

9. 1/18

10. 1/18

<u>Here is how I got my answer for 9:</u>

Step 1: Simply 9/54 to 1/6. Which leaves us with 1/6 - 1/9

Step 2: Find the least common denominator, which is 18.

Step 3: Make the denominators the same as the least common denominator. By multiplying 6*3 and 9*2. Which leaves us with 3/18 - 2/18.

Step 4: Subtract 3 and two, giving you your answer: 1/18

<u>Here is how I got my answer for 10:</u>

Step 1: Simplify 6/12 to 1/2. Which leaves us with 1/2 - 4/9

Step 2: Find the least common denominator, which is 18.

Step 3: Make the denominators the same as the least common denominator by multiplying 2*9 and 9*2. Which leaves us with 9/18 - 8/18.

Step 4: Subtract 9 and 8, giving you your answer: 1/18

Which classification describes the system of linear equations?
Aleksandr [31]

Answer:

A system of two linear equations can have one solution, an infinite number of solutions, or no solution. Systems of equations can be classified by the number of solutions. If a system has at least one solution, it is said to be consistent . If a consistent system has exactly one solution, it is independent .

The sum of two numbers is 33. Their difference is 23. Find the numbers.
Ipatiy [6.2K]

Answer: The numbers are 28 and 5

Step-by-step explanation: The question gives a set of clues. In the first instance, the addition of two numbers equals 33. Let us assume the two numbers are A and B. What that means is that

A + B = 33.

We shall call this equation 1.

The other clue is given as “their difference is 23.” This can be expressed as

A - B = 23.

We shall call this equation 2.

Now we have a pair of simultaneous equations as follows

A + B = 33 —————-(1)

A - B = 23 —————-(2)

We shall use the substitution method

From equation (1), if we make A the subject of the equation we shall move B to the other side and we’ll have

A = 33 - B

Substitute for the value of A in equation (2)

A - B = 23 now becomes

(33 - B) - B = 23

33 - B - B = 23

33 - 2B = 23

By collecting like terms we now have 33 - 23 = 2B

(Remember that when a positive value crosses to the other side of an equation, it becomes negative, and vice versa)

33 - 23 = 2B

10 = 2B

Divide both sides of the equation by 2

5 = B

If we calculate B as 5

We can substitute for this value into equation 1, which is

A + B = 33

A + 5 = 33

Subtract 5 from both sides of the equation

A + 5 - 5 = 33 - 5

A = 28.

Therefore the numbers are 28 and 5.

At 2:00 p.m. two cars start toward each other from towns 240 miles apart. If the rate of one car is 10 mph faster than the other
Juli2301 [7.4K]
Let’s call the speed of the slower car S, then the speed of the other is S+10mph.
At 5pm they have been travelling for 3 hours. The slower car travels a distance 3S and the faster one 3(S+10).
But the two distances must add up to 240 miles so 3S+3(S+10)=240, 3S+3S+30=240, 6S=210, S=35 mph. The faster car’s speed is 45mph. We can see that 3S is the same distance as 3x, so x=S=35 mph, and the distance the faster car travels is 3×45=135 miles.
