Foresters recently noticed an apparent drop in the squirrel population in a near-by oak-hickory forest. The squirrels eat acorns

produced on the oak trees; hawks eat squirrels. The foresters are not sure what is causing the decline in the squirrel population but they are concerned that both the squirrel and hawk populations will disappear. How could they best find an answer to their question?
a) Tag and track the hawks i the area
b)Conduct a decade long population study
c) Monitor the acorn production of the oak trees for several seasons
d) Use a computer simulation model of the potential first population

Answer: c) Monitor the acorn production of the oak trees for several seasons.

Explanation:

A food chain is the chain of transmission of food and energy when one organism consumes the other organism in an ecosystem.

According to the given situation, the squirrel population is dependent upon the oak trees as source of food. The hawks are dependent upon the population of squirrel as source of food. The certain decline of the squirrel as well as the hawk population may be due to the decrease in production of the oak trees for several seasons. This will reduce the population of the squirrel due to lack of food and the likelywise the population of hawk will also decline as the population will not receive squirrels as food.

How do transport proteins that are pumps differ those that are channels
ryzh [129]

Channels, when they open, just allow the molecule to pass through. With a pump, it requires energy, and will move it in a certain direction. They move rapidly into the cell via protein molecules.

The large deposit of sand and soil formed at the end of a river is a
Karolina [17]
A large deposit of sand and soil formed at the end of a river is a delta. When a river empties into the ocean, the current carrying smaller particles, such as soil and sand, slows down and eventually stops, causing these particles to be dropped off on the shore. This eventually leads to a triangular deposit, usually referred to as the mouth of the river.

Place the following events in synaptic transmission at a cholinergic synapse in order:
polet [3.4K]

I believe the correct order is:

D - A nerve signal arrives at an axon terminal;

B - Voltage gated calcium channels open and calcium enters the cell;

C - ACh is released and diffuses across the axon terminal;

E - Ligand gated sodium channels open and sodium enters the cell.

A - A postsynaptic potential is produced;

Explanation:

The dendrites of the presynaptic neurons receive a signal. The signal stimulates the nucleus of the presynaptic neuron to produce an electrical signal that is managed by the axon hillock. the axon hillock again manages and transmits the nerve impulse into the axon towards the axon terminal. The signal is transmitted via saltatory conduction on myelinated axons for faster communication. When the nerve impulse reaches the axon terminal, it causes opening of voltage gated calcium ion channels. This will cause an influx of calcium ions into the presynaptic axon terminal. The influx of calcium ions then stimulates the synaptic vessicles in the presynaptic membrane that contain the neurotransmitter acetylcholine (ACh) to move towards the presynaptic membrane. They then fuse with the membrane and open up releasing all their acetylcholine into the synaptic cleft (space between presynaptic membrane and post synaptic membrane). The ACh will bind to ligand ion channels on post synaptic membrane causing opening of sodium channels and there is an influx of sodium inside the post synaptic membrane producing a membrane potential. The voltage gated calcium ion channels in the presynaptic membrane will then close and no more ACh is released. The cells then return to rest. The acetylcholine in the postsynaptic neuron is either broken down by the enzyme acetylcholinesterase into metabolites that are used by the cell or they are removed as waste into the surrounding glial cells called astrocytes that nourish neurons. They (ACh) also can be stored for future use by the post synaptic neuron.
