Dacryoadenitis is an inflammation of the lacrimal gland that can be a bacterial, viral, or fungal infection.
Lacrimal gland is the gland responsible for lubricating eye to moisten and lubricate it. This gland is present between eyes and eye brows. The secretion of lacrimal gland is commonly known as tears.
The inflammation in lacrimal gland can be acute or chronic. The infection by bacteria or virus is the cause of acute inflammation. Chronic inflammation results for disorders like thyroid or pseudotumour. Common example of virus infecting lacrimal gland is Epstein-Barr virus and bacteria is <em>Staphylococcus</em>.
The symptoms of dacryoadenitis include redness in eyes, pain in movements, double vision, droopy upper eyelid etc. Treatment includes intake of antibiotics and abscess drainage.
