Dorothea Dix was a pioneer reformer in the 1820's who faught to get the insane to be treated as mentally ill.  She was abele to gett improvements in the in jails, poorhouses and insane asylums around the U.S. and Canada. She persuaded several states to take responsibility over the mentally ill and worked as the Superintendent of Nurses for the Union Army during the Civil War.
