The US occupied Japan after World War II in a very similar fashion to the way they monitored Germany during the same period. The Allied powers wanted to ensure that those leaders who rose to power during World War II would not have the chance to start another World War. This is why the US occupied Japan for roughly 7 years after the war. Emperor Hirohito was allowed to stay in the government but this was based on the will of the Japanese citizens.
