In 1860 Abraham Lincoln was elected as President of the United States, at this time there was a lot of tension between the Northern and the Southern states because the North wanted to abolish slavery, but the South needed it for its economy and its agriculture. So, when Lincoln was elected, the Southern states secede from the Union and chose Jefferson Davis as their president, this was the beginning of the Civil War.
