Workers were drafted, so they had to join the war and leave or quit their jobs. People also volunteered to serve, and so people who didn't get drafted or join, took their places.

When the explorers for example tried to conquer a place, casualties often occurred. Which effected the amount of people in the population. Another example is when explorers were trying to spread a religion, the population changed.
