Explanation:Double consciousness , is a concept describes by Du Bois , which refers to how African Americans find it hard to establish their own sense of self hence they end up having more than one social identity This is due to the fact that they are living in a world where they are oppressed and not regarded as equal to other races. On the other side according to the culture of America , equality and dignity is put forward.

This makes it hard for these individuals to decide whether they should identify with being oppressed or being free. This creates self doubt , and feeling of being inhibited.
