The reason that the missionaries themselves most mentioned was to spread Christianity: they believed that without it, African people could not achieve eternal salvation. Some additional reasons were that the early missionaries wanted to help abolish slavery, spread their cultural values and for political reasons: to be part of their countries colonization of Africa
