You would insert -1 into the x and take 3 times -1 which is -3 minus 1 which is -4. Helpful?

Y = 3x - 1 when x = -1
When the problem tells you what x is, put it into the problem:
y = 3(-1) -1
Solve the parentheses:
y = -3 -1
Now do the rest of it:
y = -4
