Richard is an avid gardener who spends a lot of time caring for the plants in his garden. to minimize damage from pests from his

garden, richard uses a pesticide spray. at first the spray is very effective and kills off most of the insects that he sees on his vegetable plants. however, after a few years of using the same pesticide he notices that some insects are surviving and continuing to eat his plants. the constant use of pesticides by richard has led to genetic changes in the population over many generations. this is an example of

This is an example of; evolution

Evolution is a gradual process in which the characteristics of a species are changed in response to its environment over several generations. Evolution depends on the process of natural selection. Some of the changed characteristics (traits) may be beneficial to the organism and it can be transferred to their offspring.

Answer:

1. Flower-The biological function of a flower is to affect reproduction, usually by providing a mechanism for the union of sperm with eggs.

2. leave-Leaves provide food and air to help a plant stay healthy and grow. Through photosynthesis, leaves turn light energy into food

3. Stem-The primary functions of the stem are to support the leaves; to conduct water and minerals to the leaves, where they can be converted into usable products by photosynthesis; and to transport these products from the leaves to other parts of the plant, including the roots

4. Roots-Root pressure, in plants, force that helps to drive fluids upward into the water-conducting vessels ( xylem )

The gene that causes sickle-cell disease is present in a higher percentage of residents of sub-Saharan Africa than among those o
Ivanshal [37]

Ans.

Sickle-cell disorder is a genetic disorder, which shows defected red blood cells, due to mutation in the genes for hemoglobin protein.

Malaria is common in sub-Saharan Africa region and there, natural selection favored gene for sickle cells, because it might be beneficial to people having sickle cell disease that makes them able to survive in such condition and transmit their genes to offspring.

On the other hand, in those Africans, who moved to United States, where malaria is uncommon or absent, natural selection favored normal, wild type genes, resulting in fewer people with defected sickle cell.

Hence,  sub-Saharan African population shows higher percentage of mutated gene for sickle cell as compared to population of United States.

Thus, the evolutionary process behind this difference is 'natural selection.'
