A drowsy cat spots a flowerpot that sails first up and then down past an open window. The pot is in view for a total of 0.66 s,

and the top-to-bottom height of the window is 1.80 m. How high above the window top does the flowerpot go? (Assume that in both sailing upward and then falling downward, the flowerpot is seen to span the full vertical height of the window.)

Answer:

Height covered after crossing window top = 0.75 m

Explanation:

In the question,

The height of the window pane = 1.8 m

Time for which the flowerpot is in view = 0.66 s

So,

The time for which it was in view while going up is = 0.33 s

Time for which it was in view while going down = 0.33 s

So,

Let us say,

The initial velocity of the flowerpot = u m/s

So,

Using the equation of the motion,

s=ut+\frac{1}{2}at^{2}\\1.8=u(0.33)-\frac{1}{2}(9.8)(0.33)^{2}\\1.8=0.33u-0.5336\\0.33u=2.33\\u=7.07\,m/s

So,

Velocity at the top of the window pane is given by,

v=u+at\\v=7.07-(9.8)(0.33)\\v=3.836\,m/s

Now,

Let us say the height to which the flowerpot goes after crossing the window pane is = h

So,

Using the equation of motion,

v^{2}-u^{2}=2as\\(0)^{2}-(3.836)^{2}=2(-9.8)h\\h=\frac{14.714}{19.6}\\h=0.75\,m

Therefore, the height covered by the flowerpot after window is = 0.75 m

Two skaters stand facing each other. One skater's mass is 60 kg, and the other's
jeyben [28]

Answer:

v' = 2.4 m/s

Explanation:

Given that,

Mass of one skater, m = 60 kg

Mass of the other's skater, m' = 60 kg

The two skaters push off each other. After the push, the smaller  skater has a velocity of 3.0 m/s.

When there is no external force acting on a system, the momentum remains conserved. It means initial momentum is equal to the final momentum. Let v' is the velocity of the larger skater.

mv = m'v'

v'=\dfrac{mv}{m'}\\\\v'=\dfrac{60\times 3}{75}\\\\v'=2.4\ m/s

So, the velocity of the larger skater is 2.4 m/s.

castortr0y [4]

Answer:

  • Fx = -9.15 N
  • Fy = 1.72 N
  • F∠γ ≈ 9.31∠-10.6°

Explanation:

You apparently want the sum of forces ...

  F = 8.80∠-56° +7.00∠52.8°

Your angle reference is a bit unconventional, so we'll compute the components of the forces as ...

  f∠α = (-f·cos(α), -f·sin(α))

This way, the 2nd quadrant angle that has a negative angle measure will have a positive y component.

  = -8.80(cos(-56°), sin(-56°)) -7.00(cos(52.8°), sin(52.8°))

  ≈ (-4.92090, 7.29553) +(-4.23219, -5.57571)

  ≈ (-9.15309, 1.71982)

The resultant component forces are ...

  • Fx = -9.15 N
  • Fy = 1.72 N

Then the magnitude and direction of the resultant are

  F∠γ = (√(9.15309² +1.71982²))∠arctan(-1.71982/9.15309)

  F∠γ ≈ 9.31∠-10.6°
