Athenian democracy was the first democracy, developed around the fifth century B.C.E. The Greek idea of democracy was different from present-day democracy because, in Athens, all adult citizens were required to take an active part in the government.
Based from the diary entry, it would seem as though the Germans were ready for the Americans to attack. They put mines and obstacles in the sea and on land to deter the approaching army. They used a German 88mm gun-- a long-range anti-air craft, anti-tank, anti-personnel gun most feared by the Allies-- to gun down American soldiers.
Despite these diffulties, the American soldiers drew inspiration and strength to continue fighting under the leadership of Gen. Theodore Roosevelt Jr., son of President Theodore Roosevelt, one of the highest-ranking officer on the beach during D-day
Simply put, by coercion.
There was a very simple process that followed:
(1) the Red Army invades the countries, on the pretext of "liberating" them - this gives a plausible veneer to a treacherous end;
(2) whilst occupying, Soviet commissars would prop up the local communist party (typically, enjoying only minimal support from the country's population, unless also nationalist) - this is so as to have a puppet regime-in-waiting;
(3) under Soviet occupation, typically some sort of a "referendum" or "plebiscite" will be held, at which SUDDENLY the voters will "decide" to abolish the previous constitution and to enact one that practically gives sole powers to the local communists - this is to give the effective coup d'etat a veneer of legitimacy;
(4) once installed in power, the communist party will effectively take over the machinery of state by staffing all key posts with its members;
(5) through the use of secret police and kangaroo courts, opposition, incl. those of the original governing class who did not have the good sense to escape, will be physically eliminated, sentenced to long prison terms, exiled, otherwise incarcerated;
(6) a the takeover of the state is usually followed by a takeover, through nationalisation or outright confiscation, of the economy, giving the regime financial muscle;
(7) the established position will be upheld by the same means it was acquired and with unparalleled degree of ruthlessness, with the country taken over being treated as a wholly-owned subsidiary of Kremlin Holdings.
Lincoln's political rise is one of the most interesting stories in American history. When Lincoln first entered into politics at the age of 23, he was seen as being ill-prepared to hold office and, moreover, lacking in charm in education. Over time, his intelligence, good humor, and ability to connect with votes lead him to gain greater political clout. Before 1856, Lincoln's political offices consisted mostly of service in the Illinois General Assembly and one term in Congress. In 1856 he joined the new Republican Party. Two years after that he ran for the U.S. Senate, making a name for himself in debates. By 1860 he became the first Republican candidate to win a presidential election.
