Electroconvulsive therapy is a technique, carried out under the influence of general anesthesia, whereby slight electric currents are allowed to pass through the brain, with the intent of eliciting a short-lived seizure. ECT causes alterations in the chemistry of the brain, and this can immediately reverse the signs of some mental illnesses.
