The following model can be used to study whether campaign expenditures affect election outcomes: voteA = β0 + β1log(expendA) + β

2log(expendB) + β3prtystrA + u where voteA is the percentage of the vote received by Candidate A, expendA and expendB are campaign expenditures by Candidates A and B, and prtystrA is a measure of party strength for Candidate A (the percentage of the most recent presidential vote that went to A0s party). (i) What is the interpretation of β1? (ii) In terms of the parameters, state the null hypothesis that a 1% increase in A0s expenditures is offset by a 1% increase in B0s expenditures

sin(-\theta)=-sin(\theta)\\\\

sin(-\theta)=\cfrac{1}{5}\implies -sin(\theta)=\cfrac{1}{5}\implies sin(\theta)=\cfrac{-1}{5}\cfrac{\leftarrow opposite=b}{\leftarrow hypotenuse=c}
\\\\\\
c^2=a^2+b^2\implies \pm\sqrt{c^2-b^2}=a\implies \pm\sqrt{5^2-(-1)^2}=a
\\\\\\
\pm\sqrt{24}=a\implies \pm2\sqrt{6}=a

so. hmm which is it? the +/- ?   well, neverminding for a second, the value of tangent, just looking at the sign, the tangent is positive,

tangent = opposite/adjacent.... so that only happens, when both are the same sign, + or - both

now, we know the sine is -1/5.. if the sine is negative, the cosine also has t to be negative, so we'd use the -2√(6) = a

thus     \bf cos(\theta)=\cfrac{adjacent}{hypotenuse}\implies cos(\theta)=\cfrac{-2\sqrt{6}}{5}

Find a value for x if 1/x > x
Ymorist [56]

Since x can't be zero (it sits at the denominator of the left hand side), let's split cases:

If x is positive

It this case, we can multiply both sides by x without changing the inequality sign:

\dfrac{1}{x} > x \iff 1 > x^2 \iff x \in (-1,1)

But since we're assuming that x is positive, we can only accept the numbers between 0 and 1.

If x is negative

It this case, in order to multiply both sides by x we have to change the inequality sign:

\dfrac{1}{x} > x \iff 1 < x^2 \iff x \in (-\infty,-1) \cup (1,\infty)

But since we're assuming that x is negative, we can only accept the numbers which are smaller than -1.

So, putting all the pieces together, we have that the solution is given by the following interval:

(-\infty, -1) \cup (0,1)
