No greater means equal or less. Because the problems asks about the highest score(maximum value), we are going to solve following equation:
(72+78+73+x)/ 4 = 74
(72+78+73+x)=74*4
223+x=296
x=296-223= 73
Answer is 73.

x=-112
plug in x=-112 in any of the equation, you will get y=-264
