The Vietnamization of the conflict began towards the end of 1969, under the government of Richard Nixon and was accompanied by bombings and covert attacks in North Vietnam in an attempt to cut the supply lines of the Vietcong. The reason for the implementation of this new military policy was the significant increase in protest marches in the streets of American cities against the war and the pressure of public opinion in that year after the Tet Offensive.
