Though his mother died later than his father, he got angry with the Whites and began to harbor anger against them only after the death of his mother. His feelings change from the initial confusion and fear of the 'strangers' to anger and hate towards the end for his mother's death made him feel alone, with no family member to call his family.

Long story short they were driven out of the house. On their way to the Trail of Tears, they had a hard journey.  

 

The weather that was torturing the body finally caused Samuel's mother to die. His mother's death made Samuel angry and hated those who were white. White people are only concerned with skin color and race. Michael Rutledge, who was the great-grandson of Samuel, retell this story through his writing entitled Forgiveness in the Age of Forgetfulness.
