The fact that the slave trade centers were close to the cotton-growing plantations shows the interconnectedness of these two industries. The slave trade relied heavily on plantations in order to create the demand for slaves. Similarly, the plantations relied on the slave trade to supply enough people to satisfy the labor requirements of plantations. The proximity of these two show the interdependence that existed between them.
