There should be another equation in order to solve this problem using simultaneous equations.

Otherwise, there will be more than one solution to this problem as there are different combinations of values for ( x ) & ( y ) which can be given.

For example, one answer could be:

x = 2

y = - 1 / 2

So if we substitute the values into the equation it would be as follows:

5x + 4y = 8

5 ( 2 ) + 4 ( - 1 / 2 ) = 8

10 + - 2 = 8

10 - 2 = 8

8 = 8

Another answer could be:

x = 4

y = - 3

So if we substitute the values into the equation it would be as follows:

5x + 4y = 8

5 ( 4 ) + 4 ( - 3 ) = 8

20 + - 12 = 8

20 - 12 = 8

8 = 8

As you can see, there are more than one solution for this equation. So unless the problem is asking you to just give one of various solutions and isn't asking for one definitive solution, then you will require another equation in order to solve this problem.

What is the image of (0,7) after a reflection over the x-axis
Evgesh-ka [11]

Answer:

(0, - 7 )

Step-by-step explanation:

Under a reflection in the x- axis

a point (x, y ) → (x, - y ), thus

Of all rectangles with area 324324, which one has the minimum perimeter? Let P and w be the perimeter and width, respectively
ra1l [238]

Answer:

For w = 18 units perimeter is minimum

P = 2(18 + w)

Step-by-step explanation:

Given;

Area of the rectangle = 324 units²

P is the perimeter

w is the width

Let L be the length of the rectangle

therefore,

P = 2(L + w)  ............(1)

also,

Lw = 324

or

L = \frac{324}{w} ..........(2)

substituting 2 in 1

P = 2(\frac{324}{w} + w)

now,

for minimizing the perimeter

\frac{dp}{dw}=\frac{d(2(\frac{324}{w} + w))}{dw} = 0

or

2((-1)\frac{324}{w^2}+1) = 0

or

(-1)\frac{324}{w^2}+1 = 0

or

(-1)\frac{324}{w^2} = -1

or

w² = 324

or

w = 18 units

For w = 18 units perimeter is minimum

therefore,

from 2

L = \frac{324}{18}

or

L = 18 units

objective function for P is:

P = 2(18 + w)

The total cost of a jacket and a pair of pants was $66.12. If the price of the jacket was $3.26 less than the pair of pants, wha
drek231 [11]

Answer:

The price of the jacket was $31.43

Step-by-step explanation:

Let the cost of a jacket = x

Let the cost of a pair of pants = y

Such that,

x + y = $66.12.........Equation 1.

From the conditional statement,

x = y - $3.26..........Equation 2.

Solve both equations simultaneously, using the substitution method

From Equation 2;

x = y - 3.26

Substitute y - 3.26 for x in Equation 1.

x + y = 66.12, now becomes,

y - 3.26 + y = 66.12

collect like terms

y + y = 66.12 + 3.26

2y = 69.36

y= 69.36/2 = $34.69.

Put y = $34.69 in Equation 2. to obtain x

x = 34.69 - 3.26

x = $31.43
