Whenever you add or subtract fractions, the denominators must be the same.

in the first problem, the denominators are the same so we just add the top numbers. so 4/7 + 1/7 = 5/7.

in the second, they again all have 9 on the bottom so we can add the top. so 2/9 + 3/9 + 1/9 = 6/9. However 6/9 can be reduced. 6 and 9 are both divisible by 3. so after we divide them we get 2/3 for our answer.

finally, the denominators are the same so we can just subtract the top. 7/8 - 2/8 = 5/8.

The difference between eight times a number and three is equal to negative nineteen. What is the number?
Alex777 [14]

Answer:

The number is -2.

Step-by-step explanation:

From the word problem, we can figure out the equation for the unknown number (x).

We would then work out the equation to find x.

Add 3 to -19.

8x=-16

Divide -16 by 8.

x=-2

A chef placed an order for 50 pounds of fish. He calculated that he will need 20 3/5 pounds for lunch orders. How much fish will
andrezito [222]

Answer:

29 2/5

Step-by-step explanation:

We know that 5 fifths make up a whole. The chef only needs 3/5 of that whole, so we still have 2 fifths remaining. Now, we have to subtract 50 by the number of lunch orders, 20. 50 subtracted by 20 is equal to 30, but we have to subtract a whole because of the fraction. We get the number 29. Then, we add the remaining fraction back. We get the answer as 29 2/5.

Hilary's house has a value of £180 000 correct to 2 significant figures.
Gemiola [76]

The least and highest value of the house before being rounded are £184999 and £175000 respectively.

The initial value of Sue's house before the increase is £205,000

£180,000 correct to 2 significant figures :

The greatest value of the house would be a sum in which the third significant figure is a value less than 5 and the succeeding values are highest

  • £184999

The least value of house would be a sum in which the third significant value is 5 and the succeeding values are lowest.

  • £175000

2.)

Let the price before the increase = p

  • Price after increase = £219350

7% of p = 219350

(1+7%) × p = 219350

1.07p = 219350

p = 219350 / 1.07

p = £205,000

Therefore, the price of the house before the increase is p = £205,000
