A 1200-ft equal-tangent crest vertical curve is currently designed for 50 mi/h. A civil engineering student contends that 60 mi/

h is safe in a van because of the higher driver’s-eye height. If all other design inputs are standard, what must the driver’s-eye height (in the van) be for the student’s claim to be valid?

Answer:

8.95ft

Explanation:

In order to develop this problem it is necessary to consider two concepts:

The first is the design of vertical curves through the general equation for the length of a curved vertical crest in terms of algebraic differences in grades. The second is the Design Controls for Crest vertical curves table (I attach a table at the end).

The aforementioned equation is given by:

L = \frac{AS^2}{200(\sqrt{h_1}+\sqrt{h_2})^2}

Where,

L = leght of vertical curve

S = Sight distance

A = Algebraic difference in grades

h_1 =Height of eye above roadway

h_2 =height of object above roadway surface

From the table we know that for design speed of 60 mi/h the S is 570 ft, while the value of the rate of vertival curve K, for design speed of 50mi/h is 84.

Then we can calculate the Algebraic difference in grades through:

A= \frac{L}{K}

A = \frac{1200}{84}

A = 14.285

Applying the equation to find h_1 we have:

L = \frac{AS^2}{200(\sqrt{h_1}+\sqrt{h_2})^2}

1200 = \frac{14.32(570)^2}{200(\sqrt{h_1}+\sqrt{2})^2}

Solving forh_1

h_1 = 8.95ft

Therefore the height of the driver's eye is 8.95ft

Name three situations in which force is created. describe the cause of the force in each situation
Darina [25.2K]
One situation in which force is created is when an object is moving and a force is created to stop that movement. Second situation is when an object is moving circularly and a force is created to move it towards the middle of the circle. The third situation is when a force is created that goes in the same direction as an object that is in movement.

Explanation:

At the bottom, all the gravitational potential energy was converted into kinetic energy. If you calculate the GPE, its value will be the same that the KE at the bottom. The GPE can be calculated this way:

GPE = mass×gravity×heigth

GPE = 2.2×9.8×45.08 ≈ 972

2. A 1.54 kΩ resistor is connected to an AC voltage source with an rms voltage of 240 V.
svp [43]

(a) The maximum potential difference across the resistor is 339.41 V.

(b) The maximum current through the resistor is 0.23 A.

(c) The rms current through the resistor is 0.16 A.

(d)  The average power dissipated by the resistor is 38.4 W.

<h3>Maximum potential difference</h3>

Vrms = 0.7071V₀

where;

  • V₀ is peak voltage

V₀ = Vrms/0.7071

V₀ = 240/0.7071

V₀ = 339.41 V

<h3> rms current through the resistor </h3>

I(rms) = V(rms)/R

I(rms) = (240)/(1,540)

I(rms) = 0.16 A

<h3>maximum current through the resistor </h3>

I₀ = I(rms)/0.7071

I₀ = (0.16)/0.7071

I₀ = 0.23 A

<h3> Average power dissipated by the resistor</h3>

P = I(rms) x V(rms)

P = 0.16 x 240

P = 38.4 W
