Explanation: Just to elaborate a little on the answer, it can also be added that General Ne Win (1911-2002), acting as Army Chief of Staff, had been previously in charge of bringing a relative and temporary stability to the republic, who had gained its independence from England in 1948. However, that stability did not last, and on March 2, 1962, he staged a coup d’état, becoming Prime Minister and head of the state. Ne Win suspended the constitution and placed the army in control of virtually all aspects of governement. Education, health care and economy were nationalized, and protests from students, workers, and political opponents were violently suppressed. He resigned from power in 1988.
