Chemistry

Answer:

23.34 %.

Explanation:

  • The percentage of water must be calculated as a mass percent.
  • We need to find the mass of water, and the total mass in one mole of the compound. For that we need to use the atomic masses of each element and take in consideration the number of atoms of each element in the formula unit.
  • Atomic masses of the elements:

Cd: 112.411 g/mol, N: 14.0067 g/mol, O: 15.999 g/mol, and H: 1.008 g/mol.

  • Mass of the formula unit:

Cd(NO₃)₂•4H₂O

mass of the formula unit = (At. mass of Cd) + 2(At. mass of N) + 10(At. mass of O) + 8(At. mass of H) = (112.411 g/mol) + 2(14.0067 g/mol) + 10(15.999 g/mol) + 8(1.008 g/mol) = 308.5 g/mol.

  • Mass of water in the formula unit:

mass of water = (4 × 2 × 1.008 g/mol) + (4 × 15.999 g/mol) = 72.0 g/mol.

  • So, the percent of water in the compound = [mass of water / mass of the formula unit] × 100 = [(72.0 g/mol)/(308.5 g/mol)] × 100 = 23.34 %

. Sulfur dioxide can be produced in the laboratory by the reaction of hydrochloric acid and a sulfite salt such as sodium sulfit
shutvik [7]

Answer:

Mass of SO₂ can be made from 25.0 g of Na₂SO₃ and 22 g of HCl = 12.672 g

Explanation:

SO₂( sulfur dioxide) can be produced in the lab. by the reaction of hydrochloric acid & sulphite salt such as sodium.

the balanced chemical equation is as follows

                       Na₂SO₃ + 2 HCl → 2 NaCl + SO₂ + H₂O

Moles of Na₂SO₃ = \frac{Mass}{Molecular mass} =\frac{25}{126} = 0.198

Moles of HCl = \frac{mass}{molecular mass}=\frac{22}{36.5}= 0.6

using mole ratio method to find limiting reagent

      For sodium sulfite \frac{mole}{stoichiometry} = \frac{0.198}{1}= 0.198

for HCl \frac{mole}{stoichiometry} = \frac{0.6}{2}= 0.3

since sodium sulfite is limiting reactant for above chemical reaction

1 mole of Na₂SO₃ produce 1 mole of SO₂

0.198 mole of Na₂SO₃ produce 0.198 mole of SO₂

∴ Mass of SO₂ produce = mole x molar mass of SO₂

                                       = 0.198 x 64

                                       = 12.672 g

How many moles are in 100g of carbon dioxide?
Fantom [35]

Answer:

A

Explanation:

First, let's find the molar mass of CO₂. This is 12 + 2(16) = 44 g/mole.

Now we can write 100g * (1 mole / 44g) = 2.27 mol, or A. Hope this helps!

C (graphite) is used as a lubricant, whereas C (diamond) is used as an abrasive. Why is this?
zysi [14]

Answer:

Carbon atoms in graphite and diamond are arranged in different ways. Hence, the two allotropes of carbon have different physical properties.

Explanation:

Both graphite and diamond are both made of only carbon atoms. However, their physical properties differ from each other. Hence, they are called allotropes. Think about how these carbon atoms are arranged in each of the allotropes.

Graphite

In graphite, each carbon atom is bonded to three other carbon atoms. These carbon atoms will be located in the same plane. A chunk of graphite can contain many of these planes.

Each carbon atom has four valence electrons. Three of these electrons will be used in the bonds. The other electron will be delocalized. These electrons would flow between the sheets of carbon atoms. That keeps the sheets separate and allow them to slide on top of each other.

Diamond

In diamond, each carbon atom is bonded to four other carbon atoms. These carbon atoms will form a tetrahedral network.

In graphite, there's a significant separation between two adjacent sheets of carbon atoms. The force between the two sheets is rather weak. When a piece of graphite is between two objects that move over one another, the layers in the graphite would also slide over one another. Since the attraction between two adjacent sheets isn't very strong, there wouldn't be much resistance. Hence the graphite acts as a lubricant.

In contrast, most of the carbon atoms in a piece of diamond would be connected to each other. Unlike the sheets in graphite, in a diamond there are almost no moving parts. Also, the forces between neighboring carbon atoms are very strong. When an external force acts on a chunk of diamond, the carbon atoms would barely move. Hence, the structure appears to be very rigid. That gives diamond its abrasive properties.

How many grams are in 1.70 moles of Ca(NO3)2?
Andru [333]

The number of grams in 1.70 moles of Ca(NO₃)₂ is 384.2 grams

How to determine the mass of Ca(NO₃)₂

The mole of a substance is related to it's mass and molar mass according to the following equation:

Mole = mass / molar mass

With the above formula, we can determine the mass of Ca(NO₃)₂ as illustrated below:

  • Mole of Ca(NO₃)₂ = 1.70 moles
  • Molar mass of Ca(NO₃)₂ = 40 + 3[14 + (16 × 3)] = 40 + 3[14 + 48] = 40 + 3(62) = 40 + 186 = 226 g/mol
  • Mass of Ca(NO₃)₂ = ?

Mole = mass / molar mass

1.70 = Mass of Ca(NO₃)₂ / 226

Cross multiply

Mass of Ca(NO₃)₂ = 1.70 × 226

Mass of Ca(NO₃)₂ = 384.2 grams

Thus, the mass of 1.70 moles of Ca(NO₃)₂ is 384.2 grams
