I don't understand.. but I think that I know why.. just give me a little more details about the question but here's my guess.:

It may be square root like the answer may be squared in order to answer a rectangular prism..

Or, it may be a power..

Sorry, I don't know if I was helping, but this is the best I could do b/c I don't know a lot about the problem
