Essay on slaughtering of cow in nepal

English

It seems that the BJP government’s decision to illegalise the sale of cattle for slaughter at animal markets has its roots in a PIL that quotes the five-yearly Gadhimai festival in Nepal, where thousands of buffaloes are taken from India to be sacrificed to ‘appease’ Gadhimai, the goddess of power.

The contradictions that emerge from cattle – here encompassing all bovines – slaughter rules in Nepal perplex many: despite being predominantly Hindu, animal sacrifice continues to be practised. Cow slaughter is explicitly prohibited even in Nepal’s new constitution since it is the national animal, yet the ritual sacrifice of buffaloes and the consumption of their meat is not frowned upon. There is also, in marked contrast to the Indian government’s blanket approach to cattle terminology, a lucid distinction between cows (both the male and female) and other ‘cattle’ species (such as buffaloes and yaks).

The emergence of this contradictory, often paradoxical, approach to cattle slaughter in Nepal is the result of a careful balancing act by the rulers of modern Nepal. The Shah dynasty and the Rana prime ministers often found themselves at a crossroads to explicitly define the rules of cattle slaughter. As rulers of a perceived ‘asal Hindu-sthan’, their dharma bound them to protect the cow – the House of Gorkha borrows its name from the Sanskrit ‘gou-raksha’ – but as they expanded into an empire, their stringent Brahminic rules came into conflict with des-dharma, or existing local customs, where cattle-killing was a norm. What followed was an intentionally ambiguous approach to cattle slaughter, an exercise in social realpolitik.

Bad White [126]

Read the excerpt from The Monsters Are Due on Maple Street.

As they suddenly start toward the house. In this brief fraction of a moment they take the first step toward performing a metamorphosis that changes people from a group into a mob. They begin to head purposefully across the street toward the house at the end. Steve stands in front of them. For a moment their fear almost turns their walk into a wild stampede but Steve's voice, loud, incisive and commanding, makes them stop.

STEVE

Wait a minute . . . wait a minute! Let's not be a mob!

The people stop as a group, seem to pause for a moment and then much more quietly and slowly start to walk across the street.

Which sentence from the excerpt is an example of foreshadowing?

a) As they suddenly start toward the house.

b) In this brief fraction of a moment they take the first step toward performing a metamorphosis that changes people from a group into a mob.

c) They begin to head purposefully across the street toward the house at the end.

d) The people stop as a group, seem to pause for a moment and then much more quietly and slowly start to walk across the street.

Answer:

d) The people stop as a group, seem to pause for a moment and then much more quietly and slowly start to walk across the street.

Explanation:

Foreshadowing is a technique is used to warn or predict future events.

Based on the passage, the people were marching towards a house and on their way, they were almost transformed to a mob until they are stopped by their leader who tells them that they should not turn to a mob and stops them from stampeding.

The option D is correct because it uses foreshadowing to show that they seemed to think about the consequences of their actions should they turn to a mob, then they moved much more quietly and slowly.

In an effective speech the speaker____.
strojnjashka [21]

Answer:

\boxed{\bold{Clearly \ introduces \ the \ topic}}

Explanation:

In an effective speech the speaker clearly introduces the topic

[ Spends little time developing the topic ] This answer is incorrect.

In order to ensure a clear and strong speech, taking time to develop and create a valid topic is vital. This ensures that the audience will understand and clearly follow your speech. The topic also provides the barriers and grounds for your speech.

[ States main ideas but does not support them with details ] Evidence and details are needed in ensuring a valid speech. Main ideas are just ideas to the wind without backup, evidence and details. Main ideas hook to the topic, but details hook to the main idea.

[ Allows the listener to come up with his or her own conclusion ] This is not a debate. When giving a speech, this is your time, and when it is your time this is when you give your ideas and your topic. Sometimes you can engage with your audience, but you are not to allow them to give your speech for you.
